Font Men Poster

A poster I created for Dress Code’s short film about H&FJ (before the $20 million lawsuit) and typography that is showing at SXSW this year:

You can see the trailer here.

I still hate Gotham.

Global Yodeeeellll

Posted on: February 27th, 2014 by John J. Custer No Comments

Jesse Weinberg approached me asked if I would give my point of view on NYC for her Global Yodel web project—a project aimed at sharing peoples experiences where they live. My point of view: a little jadedness, a dash of charm, and a whole lot of it-is-not-as-special-here-as-you-think-it-is.

You can read the full write up on Global Yodel’s website, here.

New Work: Dupont

The first animation of three that I storyboarded, illustrated, and art directed with my good fellas over at Dress Code has gone live. Until I upload a new project you can see the video HERE.

Full write up soon!

SK M NG Illustration

Posted on: February 12th, 2014 by John J. Custer No Comments

Another day, another illustration!

This time, Kimberly McGuire—an MFA student in Design at SVA—hit me up asking if I could send a contribution to her thesis project: SK M  NG

She describes SK M NG as, “ online platform that visually publishes the news with a single headline and connects to breaking articles across the web. The news stories visualized I hope encompass not only illustration but also vector art, gif art, motion graphics, fantasy art, sketches, etc.

As of right now her project mostly lives on Instagram, which you can see here, but once proper funding is accrued the business model will move to hiring designers, illustrators and artists—you gotta start somewhere.

The specific article Kim sent my way was one addressing CVS’s newest business move to stop selling tobacco products by the 2014 Fall and Obama’s praise of the decision.

Currently the illustration can be found on SK M NG’s Instagram page.

Thanks for looping me in, Kim, and thanks to Gail Anderson for hooking us up.

TIME Magazine: America’s Twilight War

Posted on: February 11th, 2014 by John J. Custer No Comments

I had an illustration run last week in TIME Magazine for an article by Massimo Calabresi addressing the downshift in the global hunt for terrorists—specifically the USA.

Shout out to April Bell for hooking me up with a tough but dope illustration gig for TIME Magazine, last week.

What Do You Carry?

Posted on: February 10th, 2014 by John J. Custer No Comments

Shout out to Janine Toro for looping me into his What Do You Carry? blog—a blog that displays what designers, photographers, writers, editors, and all types of other creatives carry. The ultimate stalker.

You can see my post here or check it out below.

Top, left to right, like a book:

Fujifilm X100S

Best Made Co. Higo knife

Burt’s Bees lip balm

James Avery Crown of Thorns ring (from my parents when I was 16—not exactly a car)

Tiffany & Co. Square Cushion ring (my graduation ring)

iPhone 5 (currently re-reading Fahrenheit 451. I don’t carry headphones which forces myself to read more—especially in NYC)

Krink K-71 ink marker

Sharpie paint pen (medium)

Uni-Ball Vision pen (mirco)

First set of keys to my apartment, my girlfriends apartment, my parents house, and Dress Code’s office with a key Air Max 1 chain I got at my first big internship at Nike.

Pull string necklace I made in 8th grade from my closets light pull that was too long (it’s circling the second set of keys).

Second set of keys to my family’s cabin in Woodland Park, Co. that my great grandparents built in the 30s (They never leave my backpack. My mom taught me that you never know when you’ll need them.)

Tanner Good wallet

Pocket sized Moleskine.

Larger sketch book—this one’s on its last leg.

Freitag Hazzard backpack

15″ MacBook Pro Retina

My first fight!

Posted on: January 6th, 2014 by John J. Custer No Comments

No, seriously, this is the first fight I’ve ever been in and I plan on kicking the talented Ryan Bren’s ass!

Head on over to the Type Fight website to see the brawl first hand, and vote, but make sure you vote for the right one—I got friends.

TIME Magazine: Bring Your Own Tech

Posted on: December 12th, 2013 by John J. Custer No Comments

Small illustration for TIME Magazine I did a couple weeks back for a piece sheds light on how companies are letting employees use personal computers, tablets, and phones for day to day business affairs—the future of work.

Shout out to April Bell for looping me in last minute!

New, old, new work

Posted on: December 2nd, 2013 by John J. Custer No Comments

I haven’t been able to share this work for about a year or two but am stoked to have gotten the permission to share it with the world.

In the spring of 2012 I was apart of the stellar team at COLLINS: where I worked with Brian Collins and Lee Machemayer and their designer Matt Luckhurst. We worked ferociously to create a blunt and honest branding execution for Optimum Cable.

See the project in full here.

The [New] Design Portfolio of John J. Custer

Posted on: October 15th, 2013 by John J. Custer No Comments

After nearly a year and a half of designing, re-designing, designing, taking a nap, and then driving my brilliant developer, Chris Wolf, mad with “last tweaks” The [New] Design Portfolio of John J. Custer is live.

After revision and revision_17_final_3 I went back to the basics and followed the design of my previous site, except a little grown up. I’ll create a full project post about the details and learning experience along the way.

For now enjoy the keyboard enabled, retina ready, responsive site that I cannot thank Chris enough for helping it come to light.
